The wait is over! Meredith and Derek will finally reunite in the May 22 season finale of Grey's Anatomy. In preparation for the big day, we sat down with Ellen Pompeo to talk about the much-anticipated reconciliation, the show's future, and how she lays low when she's done working for the day on ABC's popular drama.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did [Grey's Anatomy creator] Shonda Rhimes tell you that Meredith and Derek were getting back together? ELLEN POMPEO: I came in a couple weeks before we were going to go back to work and she invited me in to talk. She pretty much started off by saying she had time over the break to watch the entire series, saw where it started and where it went and where it needs to go now. It helped her get some perspective.
Did she say she made some mistakes? This is Hollywood. People don't admit mistakes.
How did you feel about Mer-Der getting back together? I told her to please make it be in a way that makes sense. Don't put us together because the fans want it: so — poof! — we're together. Please make it make sense. I would have preferred that we really stayed apart for a while and then slowly got back together. I just worry how realistic is it after all of the mess.

She’s starred in films like Catch me If You Can and Daredevil, but it’s her role in the hit medical series Grey’s Anatomy that’s made Ellen Pompeo a household name.
Kicked about the show — that revolves around her character Dr Meredith Grey, a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital — entering a new season, Ellen reveals that it’s the flaws in her character on-screen that make it so interesting. In an exclusive interview with BT, the actress talks about her experience on the show and the two men in Ellen’s life — Dr Derek Shepherd aka Dr McDreamy played by Patrick Dempsey and Dr Finn Dandridge aka DrMcVet played by Chris O’Donnell
What are the things you like and you dislike about your character? Well, I like the fact that she’s flawed. Because we don’t really see flawed characters so much, especially women. If this were a man who was so flawed, he would be complex and interesting and dark. But because she’s a woman, you know, she’s whiny and needy. It’s such a double standard, so we’re hoping to break that and show that human beings are human beings, men or women. We are flawed. We make mistakes. We have weaknesses. We have strengths, and the chance to get to play all of those things as an actor is a gift, because on series television, you are playing the same character for so long. So specifically in series television the flaws keep it very interesting for me.
How long can they carry on being interns? I don’t know. Unfortunately I can’t really answer the timeline question. The third season is a continuation of last year. So I guess we’re still in our first year. I don’t know how the writers will address that.
